The Factories Act.

ALLEGED SWEATING. [By Telegraph.] ( Per Prcas Association.) Wellington, This day. The factory cases mentioned last week came before the Court to-day. G. L. Cole was charged with subletting work received from MessrsjSargood, Son, and Eweti, and it to be done away from the premises. Dr Findlay dwelt ou the evils of sweating induced by the middleman subletting work, which it was the object of the Factories Act to prevent. One woman gave evidence that she and her daughter could make 4s 6d a day at shirt-making. Another said she could not earn 2s i3d. For the defence it was contended that the Act did not apply as Co'e was not an employe of the firm, and had a perfect right to sublet. Judgment was reserved, and the other cases were adjourned sine dir.
