LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The formation of ;i chess and draughts club for Hastings is being mooted. The Government has been advised that the Earl and Countess of ltanfurly will be in Sydney 011 the Ist proximo. The Bowling Club tender a smoke concert to Mr J S. D'Emden to-night at the Princess Theatre. The provisional committee of the proposed recreation ground meets to-night at the Princess Theatre. G. H. Vickers and Co. hold their usual weekly auction sale at their rooms tomorrow. In connection with the theatrical performance at Napier to-morrow night the 10 o'clock train to Hastings will be delayed until 10.40. It will be noticed elsewhere that ColorSergeant Humphreys of the Hastings Kifles has won the gold medal given for Volunteer shooting in the North Island. The committee of the Athenaeum met last night when accounts amounting to £'lß were passed, and arrangements made for holding the annual general meeting next week. The Napier Club have forfeited their match against the County Club to-morrow. The latter will hold a practice at Havelock, when all players are requested to attend. Mr M'Kerrow, the Commissioner appointed to enquire into claims of old soldiers, sat at the Hastings Hotel this afternoon. Evidence was head from nine claimants ; eight others did not appear. Mr W. Y. Dennett in extending his premises as he is doing evidently lias great faith in the future of Hastings. The enterprising salesman has just imported a very large stock, including some first-class furniture. Mr J. S. D'Emden, manager of the Union Bank, who has been transferred to Wellington was entertained by the citizens of Hastings at the Carlton Club Hotel last evening. There was a thoroughly representative gathering and Mr W. Beilby occupied the chair. In making a presentation of an illuminated address and a purse of sovereigns, the chairman spoke in terms of the highest praise of the departing guest. Mr H. H. Murdoch and Mr A. L. D. Fraser also spoke in a similar strain. Mr D'Emden, who was visibly affected, heartily thanked the donors for their extreme kindness, assuring them that he would never forget his Hastings friends. An interesting action for damages, to be heard at Invercargill, is pending. Recently several farmers in the Dipton district lost a lot of sheep—iu the aggregate some hundreds —through.some at the time inexplicable agency, though it was apparent to them that the cause was a form of blood-poisoning. Investigation by experts followed, with the result (says the Wyndham Herald) that a certain brand of sheep-dip. samples of which had been used by all the complaining farmers just prior to the heavy mortality, was deemed to be at the root of the trouble. One farmer lost as many as 160 sheep. The farmers reckon they have a good case for the recovery of damages from this particular sheep-dip manufacturer, hence the prospective legal proceedings. The case is one that will prove of much interest to all sheep-owners. At a Westport wedding recently, as the newly married couple were leaving the church, a well-known milk vendor boldly stepped up to the bridegroom and asked for a turn for the ensuing month. He got the order. A penny-in-the-slot bicycle is in use in Glasgow for hiring purposes. The cost is a penny for every five miles travelled, and If you neglect to drop in a penny at the end of each five miles the wheels refuse to turn. According to the Wairarapa Observer the opening of the railway through the Forty Mile Bush has proved an unkind cut for Eketahuna. The township is fast being deserted, and houses in all directions are empty. The London correspondent of the Auckland Herald, writing under date May 28th states that the improvement in Sir George Grey s health is maintained, and that he has been able even to go out for a drive. Wairoa is evidently determined not to be left out of the proposed railway scheme, and the Railway League threatens that if the East Coast League persists in advocating only the Gisborne-Rotorua line the Wairoa I eague will withdraw its affiliation and work independently. The Hawera Chamber of Commerce is conferring with the local Agricultural and Pastoral Association, with a view of sending a letter to the Government requesting information in reference to the pork industry ; and, if information is not available, the Department be asked to communicate with Mr Seddon if necessary. Hawera considers there is money in porkraising. A syndicate has been formed and a sum of nearly £SOO subscribed for the purpose of boring for bituminous coal at Hokonui, Southland. Several small seams of true coal have been found, but not of sufficient thickness to pay for working. Those interested have requested, the Hon. J. G. Ward to ask for the services of the Government Geologist to fix the most suitable spot for boring, and also for a Government subsidy.
