Some interesting war news appears on our fourth page to-day. The Hon. J. Carroll was delayed in Napier yesterday and did not get away to Gisborne by the Tasmania. He leaves by the Dingadee to night. The Jubilee celebrations are proving too much for the cablegramer, who has decended to twaddle. A wire all the way from London this morning informs us that some of the London poor were given " tarts, vegetables, and beer," in honor of the occasion. Evidently the boy-journa-lists have beeii left to look after the colonial wires, Miss Price, of Porangahau, narrowly escaped a serious accident yesterday. The lady had just terminated a visit to the Rev. Hayes' house. Miss Price and the groom, Fred Ilall, were both thrown out, Hall escaping without injury and Miss Price with a severe shaking After a little while she was, however, able to resume her journey in a friend's conveyance, and left for home by train little if anything the worse for her adventure. The Rev. Canon St Hill's trap was smashed, and is at present under repairs at Mr Symonds' coach factory. On the Hon. Mr Carroll's return to Hastings he should pay a visit to the police station and perhaps he might be in a position to inform his colleagues that the local quarters are the very worst in New Zealand. It is a standing disgrace to the Department of Justice that after all the overtures that have been made on the subject Constable Smith is compelled to have his office in what is nothing better than a stable. The accommodation is so horribly meagre that the horse-feed has to be kept in the " room " where all the official duties are performed. The lock-up is also out of date, and judging by the appearance of the unfortunates who spend a night in the cells the punishment is almost as bad as that meted out in Siberia. On a cold night the prisoners are almost frozen to death, and it is a crime to place a man with a weakened constitution therein. Government should certainly arouse themselves in this matter, and Captain Russell should not let them rest until an improvement is made.
