Benefit Societies Commission.
{Per Press Association.)
Wellington, This day
Before the Royal Commission Major Steward pointed out with reference to the Bank of New Zealand Society that if the Legislature abolished the fund and divided it up those who had left the services of the bank or died would get nothing. His opinion was that it would be better to place it on a proper basis. The members agreed that it would be difficult to discover claimants. Mr B. M. Lichfield, assistant inspector, was the only witness this morning. He was trustee at the time the rules were altered to conserve Mr Butt's interest, which he admitted was done because Mr Butt was leaving. Other officers, however, had benefited by the alteration, and there were special circumstances in Mr Butt's case which justified their action. He was aware that tilery was grave dissatisfaction among the officers about the fund, and thought it should be put on a better footing.
