LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Dear Sir, —The executive of the Flood Relief Committee have desired me to convey to you and all who assisted at your Sports a special hearty vote of thanks for your kind services and beg leave to acknowledge receipt of your cheque for £7l 10s 3d, which is a very handsome amount. Piease convey thanks to all who assisted to make the sports such a success and oblige, yours faithfully, G. H. Swan, Chairman. I note that the amount is for widows' and orphans'fund." We live in an age of invention. Scarcely a day passes that we do not hear of inventions of more or less value. The latest on the market is an everlasting shaft tug, which has been patented by the Skelton Company of Christchurch. Judging by tlie sample shown us on Saturday there is plenty of money in it, and it is not suprising to learn that as soon as the shares were put on the market tuey were rapidly snapped up. The old style of leather tug was constantly being worn out with anything like heavy work. In Mr Skelton's patent, a maganese bronze casting is encased in the leather, which gives it a permanency not otherwise obtainable. Arrangements are being made by which malleable castings will be used, and it expected that the new article when finished will not cost more than the present tug. A leading firm of harnessmakers in Hastings has expressed the greatest satisfaction with the idea, and it is probable that in a few days ine article will be supplied locally. For heavy work the everlasting tug should prove invaluable. Mr George has arrived in Woodville to make arrangements for developing the copper mine* at Maharahara. It is probable that a jam factory will be started in Hastings shortly. The indus try should prove a profitable one. Mr Collingo acknowledges the receipt of £5 2s 6d from the station hands at Flaxmere, per Mr S. Miller, for the Flood Belief Fund.
Two men, charged with being drunk, were brought before Mr Beilby this morning. As it was their first appearance they were discharged with a caution. The application of Mr Crane, made to the Fielding Borough Council last week, is a rather remarkable one. It appears that when, he buried his wife 20 years ago he did not mark the position of the grav After being absent from the district for several 3-ears he went to the cemetery and placed a mark over a grave which he considered was that of his wife, but he found that Mr Spooner claimed it also as the place where his wife had been buried. The only way now the question can be settled is by disinterring the body for identificacion.
