The President of the conference of the Chambers of Commerce has aiiirmed the desirability of the early laying of trie Pacific cable, and is asking the co-operation of the Premiers of" the other colonies and making representation to the Imperial authorities on the subject. The new Japanese Consul has arrived. He states that his chief duty is to promote trade with Australia. Since the war there has been great development in Japanese manufactures, which be expects to lead to a largelv increased demand for Australian wool and other products. Melbourne, June 12.
