LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Ladies are interesting themselves in the proposed public recreation ground for Hastings, and the inclusion of a tennis court in the project is almost certain. A football match was played this morning between t u e Heretaunga School and the Napier High School on the former's ground, resulting in a win for the Hastings boys. Borough ratepayers who are in arrears with their rates due on May 31st last are requested to note that if the amounts are not paid by Tuesday, 15th inst., they will be penalised to the extent of 10 per cent. A cable has been received from the Premier expressing sympathy with the sufferers by the Hawke's Bay floods, and mentioning that he had only just heard news of the disaster. At the Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr Beilbv, J.P., a mau described in the warrant as " Cromby or Palmer," was remanded to JDanevirke on a charge of obtaining money under false pretences. Captain Kussell this morning received the following cable from Mr Seddon : —- ''London, Jane 8. Learned to-day sad disaster overtaken your district. Heartily sympathise sufferers. Hope every effort made to relieve them." The following further donations have been received by the Mayor of Napier in aid of the Flood Relief fuudAmuri County Council £lO3 3s 6d, Kenepuru £5 19s 3d, Manaroa 15, Cliristchurch £SO (making £1000), Kopua £1 16s, Hastings sports £7l 10s 3d, Rev. Mr Pegler, who has been connnected with the teaching staff at the District school during the past few months, left this morning by the express train en route for Christcburcli. Mr Pegler, who has made himself very popular in the district, was presented with a set of toilet brushes from the local Football Club before the train departed. A short time ago the committee of the Magpie Minstrels offered a prize of £1 Is for the best original local conundrum or joke. Sufficient were received to make a full entertainment of. For the past week the management has been engaged in sorting and classifying the funnyisms, and the cream of them will be given at the entertainment on Thursday next. By the way, there has been a big rush for reserved seats, and there is certain to be a bumper house, It was a southern station. The rabbits were getting scarce on the run. The runholder encouraged the rabbiters to prosecute the work of trapping with greater keenness by the offer of 2d a skin all round. The rabbiters saw that the price of rabbitskins wholesale was so and so in Dunedin, and as there was a considerable margin of profit a bale came up to the rabbiters, who retailed them to the runliolder at his own price. The trick was discovered, but the runliolder could not imagine for a while how it was that the rabbits had increased so rapidly and so suddenly. The Lancet records the following : —ln a recent discussion on improvements in the X ray apparatus one of the speakers mentioned |that he possessed a fluorescent screen measuring 6ft. by lift. It is intended to show the full-length figure all at one view, and on an occasion when the apparatus was being inspected by a number of persons it was the means of creating an embarrassment almost beyond the power of words to describe. A lady having incautiously passed in the line of rays was suddenly displayed on a large screen, and as dress materials are very transparent to the rays, her costume, of course, did not count foe much in the picture.

A railway announcement for Jubilee week appears elsewhere. All will be pleased to learn that Mr J. Collingeis improving in health and expects to be about again in a day or two. The list of stock for Messrs Williams and Kettle's sale at Stortford Lodge on Tuesday next is advertised to-day. The Clive and Te Aute footballers are engaged this afternoon in a match on the Hastings racecourse. The vote on the proposal to borrow £IB,OOO for water and drainage at Hawera was negatived. The Hon. W. Rolleston. recently wrote a letter to the Mayor of Christ-church making certain Jubilee suggestions. It took three days to decipher the siguat-ure. A well-established Sheffield firm is reported to have offered to take 5000 tons per annum of charcoal iron made from Taranaki iron sand, at over £6 per ton. The Naval and Military Claims Commission, which sits in Wellington on Monday next, will investigate 1021 cases in different parts of the colony. At a public meeting at Gisborne last night it was decided to commemorate the Queen's record reign by erecting a firebell tower, with lamps, in the main street, by planting the new public domain by school children, a fireworks display, bonfires, &c. The Wanganui School Committee has passed a r solution recommending teachers to discontinue home lessons in St-an-dju-ds below the Fourth, and to dispense with them as far as possible in the Fourth and upper Standards. A plebiscite taken at Hawera through the medium of the local newspaper has resulted in 74 votes being cast in favor of the purchase of a town clock, to perpetuate the Record Reign. Some one suggested the establishment of a crematorium. An ancient cannon at Moturoa, New Plymouth, is to be fired during the local festivities connected with the Ilecord Reign, but the Harbor Board, to whom the piece belongs, has wisely declined to accept any responsibility. The Salvation Army's new Rescue Home for Women at Caversham, Dunedin, is to be opened on Wednesday, 16th inst., by the Hon. W. D. Stewart. At the new home the Army will be able to classify the inmates, a system which has been found successful elsewhere. Mr D. Whyte, who was in Wairoa recently has asked the Wairoa Guardian to state why he has abandoned the route he at first proposed for the railway. He sketched the line to run on the western side of the Wairoa river so as to prevent the heavy bridging. As °oon, however, as the Hon. J. Carroll proposed that the line should follow the roads he (Mr Whyte) at once abandoned his own plan and recognises all the advantages of following up Mr Carroll's suggestion.
