Truth states that the Czar's Jubilee present to the Queen will consist of emeralds to the value of £IO,OOO.
Percy Cavill, the New South Wales champion swimmer, at present in England, has challenged Nuttall, the English professional champion, to swim for any amount up to £560 a side. Nuttall has not replied. June 10. It is expected that Mr Edmund Barton, M.L.C., of Sydney, will be included in the honors to be conferred in commemoration with the Queen's Jubilee. Arrangements are in progress for a conference between the colonial Premiers and the Hon. J. Chamberlain. Paris, June 10. The Suez Canal Company has decided to erect a statue at Port Said to Ferninand De Lesseps, the projector of the canal. The statue is to cost a quarter of a million francs. Berlin, June 9. A powder factory in Bavaria was destroyed by a flash of lightning, which exploded 11,0001b of powder stored in the building. The force of the shock completely shattered 11 houses in the vicinity. C'ape Town, June 10. Mr Cecils Rhodes has left Capetown for Rhodesia. New York, June 9. Ten millionaire directors of the American Cigarette Trust are being tried here on charges of attempting to compel dealers to sell the trust s goods only.
