THE HAWKE'S BAY FLOOD, 1897.
[To The Editor.] Sib,—l have been waiting, like numbers of others, expecting to see our member, Captain Russell, come to the front, not only as our representative but as an old settler on the Heretaunga plains, to take a prominent part in devising some feasible scheme as a future protection against the flooding of our district. Surely the recent article in the Telegraph ought to be sufficient to arouse the apathy of every right-thinking settler, much less one whose first duty ought to be the task of protecting the interests of the district he is supposed to represent. The settlers must now awake from their lethargy and protect themselves, by calling a public meeting. It is evident that our member is asleep regarding our interests, and with the aid of that intensely selfish Napier evening paper our district is doomed unless immediate action is taken.—l &JLQ, &C., HEREIAUNGA.
