The missionaries in the Congo State are making complaint of the cruel treatment to which the natives are being subjected by persons engaged in the rubber trade, who are answerable for burning 4-5 villages in one district. May 16. The Government has decided to appoint a Royal Commission to enquire into and report upon the method of fixing rents of Irish holdings. Mr Gerald Balfour states the charges made against the competency and honesty of the sub-commission be enquired into. Washington, May 15. An action for divorce brought by Mrs Langtry, the famous actress, in the Californian Courts, pro%ed successful. The petition was on the grounds of desertion and want of maintenance. Rome, May 16. In the Chamber of Deputies M. Rudini stated that the Italian garrisons in Abssyinia would be limited to Massowah, the remander in the province of Eryherea would be retained by Italy under direction of the native chiefs. It was intended to cede Kassala to Egypt.
