LOCAL AND GENERAL.

'Frisco mail news will be found on our fourth page. A football match will be played to-mor-row afternoon on Queen's Square. All players are requested to roll up at 3 o'clock. Wild ducks must be very plentiful this season in this district, as to-day we saw a spring-cart load of them being sold at 3s a brace. We beg to dm'w attention to Messrs Ivirkcaldie and Stains' replace announcement which appears in another column, and which should be of special interest to the ladies of Hastings and district. A torch light procession of the Druids in full regalia headed by. the town baud will leave Cullen's corner at 8 o'clock. It is just 152 years ago to-day since the memorable Battle of Fontenoy was fought. Amongst the generals on the field were Lord Hay, the Duke of Cumberland, Lord Clair, Marshal Saxe, King Louis of France, and Brian Boru. Some time ago an application was made by the Borough Council for extra police for Hastings, and it was understood that the head of the department would accede to the request. So far this has not been carried out, and as it is perfectly impossible for two men, the force we have at present, with all their multifarious duties, to be in two or three places at once, the result is that occasionally scenes take place which ought not too. Owing to the demand for labor through the late disastrous floods a number of men who would not otherwise have been employed have been at work in various capacities, and so soon as they are paid they come to town and become a perfect nuisance to respectable hotelkeepers and the townspeople. This was the case yesterday, and unless an addition —a permanent one—is made to the force it will be impossible to cope with the annoyance. The Pahiatua Herald says: —"The Hastings Standard lias celebrated its first birthday. Notwithstanding the unpatriotic preference of the local bodies for foreign papers the Standard has obtained a secure footing in the town and district, and is to-day a credit alike to its proprietors and to Hastings. Enterprising and accurate, it is undoubtedly one of the best papers in the colony outside of those published in the four chief centres, and judging from its advertising columns the success of the plucky venture is assured. We wish its enterprising proprietors every properity." Thanks ! We deserve it. Speaking at the banquet to Mr A. E. Rhodes, the defeated candidate for Geraldine. Mr Scobie Mackenzie referred to the Bushy Park purchase. He said *' it was scarcely right to level charges against anyone until they had all the facts before them. There were so many people involved in the matter —the (iovi-rnuient, the Assets Board and the Land Purchase Board —that they would not be justified in making aspersions on any one of them until all the fact.- were before them as they would be next -essisn. lie was pretty sure from his (Mr Mackenzie's) own knowledge of the land that a full price hail been paid for it. All are heartily invited either to Mrs Soltau's bible readings at 3 o'clock each day or to the evening meetings, or to Mr Soltau's childrens' mission in the Wesleyau Church at 3.30. These Evangelists come with high recommendations, and have been the means of great good elsewhere." At the Dunedin Police Court yesterday several cases under the Factory and Shop Assistants Act came up. The charge against a blacksmith, who employed his son, of not registering was withdrawn, as Mr Carew held there must be a master and two servants to constitute a factory. Another case against a coal merchant was dismissed. A fine of 10s and costs was imposed in another case for employing a female after 1 p.m on Saturday. In the case against a coal merchant charged with employing a carter after 1 o'clock a fine of 20s and costs was inflicted.
