The Park Racing Club has postponed its winter meeting from May 12th and loth to May 19th and 20th owing to the roads being impassable. A man named John Roberts sentenced to out month's imprisonment for larceny at Danevirke, arrived last evening and was taken on to Napier by Constable Butler by the midday train to-day. At the S.M. Court to-day. before Mr\Y. Beilby. J.P.. William Farley, charged with being drank and a vagrant, and Thomas Jloss and Patrick M'Gralh, vagrants. were committed and cautioned to leave the town within an hour, which they promised to do. There is a good deal of grumbling, we are informed, among the men employed in J reparing the railway line at "Waitangi and washout at the low wages paid, fis t»d pvr day, more especially as a good deal of the work necessitates the men being up to their knees in water all the time. There is a manifest lack of interest on i the part of the Hastings householders in matters pertaining to tlie aflairs of the District school. At last night s annual meeting of householders there ""as a paltry attendance of about Half-a-dozen outside the members of the committee. *1 his sparse attendance is due. no doubt, to the fact that the Committee has given satisfaction and that the householder* are thoroughly satisfied with its efforts ; but. at the a&iiw tune We unist confess it > a a vtrv lukewarm manner of shewing their appreciation of the time expended bv the comuiittit men in the interests of the school. n ■ Li- Cascaba Liyke Kh'K Lir- u:S a->'< ai.l effect"'.? rei:i->d'. f- r V m . h a i li>e r i 'uinplaiiits. »jch i- I:i h_*- -•. .p.. The Misses Hardie and Manning make an announcement in another column. The Druids' Ball takes place on Friday evening 27th inst. when the proceeds will be given in aid o! the Flood Belief Fund. Apart from the good object the ball is bound to be one of the successes of the season. As Mr E. Winsley is to be the caterer, those present may depend on the wants of the inner man being properly attended to. The balance-sheet of the School Committee presented last night showed an account for £l2 6s for stationery purchased at Napier. We unhesitatingly protest against this line of action in obtaining goods from Napier when such can be purchased in Hastings. It is this sort of thing that tends to keep Hastings under the screw-jack of Napier. The sooner local bodies cut themselves adrift from the breakwater village the better for Hastings. At a recent meeting of the Flood Belief Committee the town was-divided into sections for the purpose of being properly canvassed, and the different clergyman called for volunteers to canvas the district assigned to them. An .impression seems to prevail among some persons called oil that the funds given were to be applied only to the denomination to which the collectors belong. This of course is entirely erroneous, as all moneys are paid into the general fund for the benefit of sufferers, no matter to what creed or color they belong. A meeting of the Bowling Club was held it O'Bielly's Hotel last night. Mr \Y. C. Maddison in the chair. It was decided to vote in favor of holding the next general tournament in Napier ; that inter club and champion four matches be played at such tournament, and that a new rule providing that no bowls with a less bias than Taylor's No. 3 be used. The secretary announced that the work in connection with the forthcoming ball was being pushed ahead. It was resolved that the Season be closed forthwith, and the meeting adjourned.
Mrs 13. S. Carlton announces that she has started business over Beck and Co's premises m Station street. She has returned from a tour during which she has made it her business to become acquainted with the very latest ladies' fashions, and as she has had experience in dressmaking with Ballautyne and Co., Christchurch, and Neal and Close, Napier, patrons may rest assured of being thoroughly satisfied.
Mr J. A. Smith at the School Committee meeting last liight said there was a scarcity of male 'teachers. His explanation was that their pay being small at the commencement they left the profession and drifted into merchants offices, itc., where their "education procured them a good position and salary. This is bad and points to the fact that more inducement should be held out to young men to take up and continue the profession of teachers. Girls become teachers and after going through an apprenticeship of five years or so they get married and their services are lost to the country which had the trouble and expense of training them; for this reason boys, who adopt teaching, should be shown a preference by the committee when recruiting the ranks of pupil teachers, at least until such time as the scarcity which Mr Smith complains of is disposed of. Fish in the Boyal Aquarium in St. Petersburg are still alive after having been on exhibition for over 150 years.
Sir Edwards Clarke made £IOO his first year at the bar. His earnings are now reported to average £20,000 per annum.
