To-day the following urgent message was received : "The Government learn with deep regret of the awful calamity that has overtaken your district by Hoods and attended by loss of life. My colleagues and myself desire that }ou should convey our sincere sympathy tu the widows and orphans of those who lost their lives. We wish to state that every assistance will he given by the Government officers in the district in assisting settlers. The Hon. Mr Ilail•Ton.'S. Minister of Public Works, is leaving to-day fur Hawke s Bay and will arrange for such help as may be required to relieve necessitous eases. —Jons Mclvf.xzie, Acting Premier. The following reply was sent by the Mayor : Thanks for your telegram and sympathy. The Hood damage done in Hastings insignificant compared to the districts of Meanee, Papikuri and Clive : there the damage is appalling. Two boat loads of men, from Napier, going to rescue of settlers at ("live, were swept out to sea and all hands lost. Loss of life among settlers nominal. Numerous losses of stock of all kinds owing to the river banks bursting. Principal road bridges carried away. Necessary for Government to take immediate action to prevent Ngarororu river breaking out again. C. A. Fitzlioy. Mayor of Hastings.
