RESCUERS LOSE THEIR LIVES When word was received in Napier that signals of distress had come from Farndon, and that help was urgently needed, five boat? set out for rescue work. The river was a raging torrent at the time, and those who volunteered to man the boats knew that they did so under very groat risk. The pilot boat, under Captain Tonkin, after a very rough trip, reached Farndon at midnight 011 Friday, but two of the other boats, with ten occupants, were overturned and all on board were drowned. The names of the unfortunates are : Sergeant O'Donovan (married, four children) Constable Stephenson (married, four children) Athur M'Cartney, licensee of the Albion Hotel, married, four children Fred C'assin, clerk, married, four children Harry Brierly, wheelright, married, 110 family J. Prebble, married, no family J. Gborne, draper, single C. T. Rose, commercial traveller G. Chambers, blacksmith, single F. Ansell, carpenter, married, six children. All are well-known throughout the district, and very great sympathy is felt for the bereaved relatives. A man named -John Broadbent is reported to have lost his life at Waitangi. On Saturday J. Cunningham was drowned at Chestc-rhope.
