Farewell to Mr S. Roberts.
A SOCIAL GATHERING
Mr S. Roberts, of the Union Bank, who is under orders of transfer to Wellington, was banq letted by a large number of citizens at the Hastings Hotel last evening. The gathering, which was a representative one. testified to the high respect in which Mr Roberts is held by all he has come in contact with, both in social affairs and in business matters. Mr A. L. 1». Eraser occupied the chair, and opened the proceeding by a few approprinte remarks. A sumptuous repast, prepared by host O'Rielly, was here disposed of and those who partook were unanimous in the opinion that the spread, .surpassed anything of its kind yet sampled in Hastings. The Chairman, in proposing the toast of the j,'uost of the evening, said that he had known Mr Roberts since his arrival in Hastings and had found him to be courteous and obliging in his official capacity and a jolly good fellow in every day life. Iu making these remarks he felt that he was only re-echo-ing the sentiments of a very large portion of the community. He wished Mr Roberts every success in the future ami hoped to see him back again in Hastings, lie charge ther glasses and drink to Mr Roberts' health and future prosperity. The toast was honored by three hearty cheers. Mr RoUrt-. in responding, thanked one and all for their kindness in drinking to his future prosperity, and also for the kind and cordial n-maiks that had just fallen from the lips of their worthy Chairman.
