SOUTH AFRICAN AFFAIRS.
AX IMPORTANT SPEECH BY MR CHAMBERLAIN. (I'if Prist Axwiation. —<
London, March 28,
At the farewell banquet to Sir Alfred Milner, the new Governor of Cape Colony, Mr Chamberlain, in the course of a speech, said he hoped the Transvaal would realise that it was its duty to fulfil the terms of the Convention entered into with Britain, and would in tilne extend the hand of fellowship to foreigners. The country supported the British Government in their determination to maintain the integrity of the Convention and the position of Britain as the paramount power in South Africa. The aspiration for the federation of the states in South Africa under Hutch influence, was incompatible with the highest British interests.
The South African League cabled to Mr Chamberlain declaring that insistence upon the terms of the Transvaal Convention was absolutely essential. Reports from South Africa state that the native rebellion in Jieehtianaland is spreading.
