Tlie Education Board requires an assistant mistress for the Patutahi school. Messrs Viewers and Co. have a number of small properties and jewellery for sale. The Waipawa Licensing election resulted in the return of live moderates and the defeat of the temperance candidate. The voting was Hon W. C. Smith 789, C. Whittington 770, L. Right 743, A. McKay 735, W. Henderson 712, Rev. H. Ries 348. This morning, before Messrs A. L. 1). Fraser and G. Ellis, J's.P., George Shellam (Air Lee) and Charles Walker (Mr Sheath), were brought up charged with using insulting and provoking language at the public hall in Havelock during the progress of a dance on the night of the 19tli inst. Mr Scannell appeared for the prosecution. After hearing evidence the case was dismissed. Arthur Adams was charged with, on the 10th inst, destroying a mare value j£2o the property of Mr E. J. Whibley. A. Thomas, W. Carr, E. Bell, and D. "Watt gave evidence, from which it transpired that the mare in question occupied a paddock adjoining another in which a young colt was running. The mare seems to have been in the habit of irritating the other brute, and at last Adams, who was in charge of the colt, brought out a gun, followed up the mare, and discharged the contents into its body. Mr Appel attended the animal, but peritonitis supervening, it died on the 19tli inst. Accused was committed for trial at the next Supreme Court sitting at Napier, bail being accepted, himself and two sureties, in £SO.

The Greymoutli-Point Elizabeth Railway and Coal Company has been served with writs by nine relatives of those who were killed at the Brunner mine disaster. In each case .£IOOO is claimed.

Yesterday was observed as a general holiday at Brunnerton ill commemoration of the Bruuner disaster. Many people visited the large grave, which was liberally covered with wreaths. As a young girl was walking from the Auckland Domain recently she was seized by a man and assaulted. In a divorce ease in the Auckland Supreme Court Margaret Coombs (petitioner) v. William Coombs (respondent) and Alice Smith (co-respondent), a decree nisi was granted, but the Judge said that it was not a satisfactory ease ; he was quite satisfied about the adultery but not about desertion. A child aged three years, named Adelaide Rylands, was drowned in the Northern Wairoa river yesterday. The child was playing on the beach with her brother aged seven, who is weak mined. The tide came in, and Adelaide was surrounded by water on a sandspit, her brother being unable to render assistance. A skeleton has been found at Taupiak with a bullet hole in the shull, and a spade, billy, and blankets alongside. The remains are belived to be those of a gumdigger. A wife-beater named Hubert .lamieson was sentenced to two months' imprisonment at Auckland yesterday, lie had been before the Court on similar charges. A raid was made on Thursday at Kan ia i Auckland on certain suspected sly grug selling houses. Seven persons are «ai<l to be implicated. The police made another raid on certain Kennedy Bay settler-;, armed with search warrants. Very little grog was found on any of the premises. It is understood that two detectives have Iji i'ii in that district over a week, ami that two charges will be laid for sly grog selling.

The Government received a cable yesterday confirming the appointment of the Earl of Ranfurly as Governor of New Zealand. Mr D. H. Robertson, manager of the Milton branch of the Bank of New Zealand, died yesterday from the effects of injuries received on the 10th instant while riding down hill on a bicycle.

The body of a man, apparentlv from 60 to 65 years of age, was discovered yesterday at Dunedin at the foot of Stuart street on the harbor shore. There were no papers on the body, which, so far. has not been identified. A young man named Jvilliam Barnes was drowned at Westport yesterday. He was engaged in pulling a punt over the river when nearing the bank the pole slipped. Barnes* fell into the river, an eddy taking him under the punt The body has not yet been recovered. Deceased was about 35 years of age, single, and belonged to Christchurch, where his father at one time kept a foundry. He has relatives in Canterbury.
