LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Miscellaneous extract matter appears on our fourth page. Mr Caulfield, representing the Government Insurance Department, is now in Hastings trying to push business. A meeting of holders of allotments in the Hastings Cemetery will be held at the Council Chamber this evening at 7.30 for the purpose of electing trustees. Owing do the Railway Department requiring the Woodville School Committee to guarantee .£9O for a train the school excursion to Napier arranged for Friday has been abandoned. The local Bowling Club will select two teams to play a match with two Bluff Hill teams to-morrow on the Hastings green. This is a return match for one played in Napier last Wednesday. Messrs Vickers and Co. are selling Mr Horace Reeves household furniture on the premises on Friday next. They also sell stock at the same place on account of Mr Mundell. Mr Williams, late gardener to Mr J. D. Ormoncl, Karamu, who is well-known and highly respected throughout Hawke's Bay, is at present lying in tlie Napier Hospital in a most precarious condition. For some years Mr Williams complained of asthma, which became so acute that he was obliged to resign his position at Karamu, and he was lately superintending the affairs of MiStock's Stortfoid Lodge Hotel. Within the last four weeks Mr Williams' health began to show visible signs of declination and with a view to recruiting his strength he was persuaded to take a trip to Auckland, which he did. The fatigues of travel, however, were too much for him and he returned home and according to the latest reports his condition is, we regret to say, extremely low. The many friends of Mr Goldsmith, manager of the local branch of the New Zealand Clothing Factory, will regret to learn that he leaves Hastings next week in order to take over the management of the company's branch house in Blenheim. Mr Goldsmith has been here for the past seven years during which time his unaffected goodfellowship and straightforwardness coupled with a manliness which prompted him to say well of his neighbor or ignore him altogether raised for him hosts of frends and a wide circle of acquaintances by whom he is beloved and respected. Mr Goldsmith identified himself prominently with musical matters during his stay here and it is with much pleasure that we are in a position to announce that his removal from here is a promotion with a substantial rise in salary.

Captain Kidley, of the Gothic, met with an accident at the Rakaia railway station when travelling by the express last night. A further communication from the Secretary of State has been received by his Excellency the Administrator, to the effect that nine Premiers have accepted the invitation to be present at the Queen's record reign celebrations, and asking for an early reply with regard to the Premier of New Zealand. Nothing has yet been decided on by the Cabinet. A deputation of ladies waited on the Premier, urging that effect be given to the petition presented to him for the release of Mrs Loclier, the woman now detained during the pleasure of the Crown for shooting at George Norbury in Harcourt and Go's auction mart about a year ago. The Premierreplied that the Government could not at present recommend her release. It is understood that Parliament will now be asked to move in obtaining her release during the record reign fetes.
