Miscellaneous extract matter appears on our fourth page. As there was no quorum at the Ilabbit Board meeting yesterday, it was postponed till April 6tli. The Chiaroscurama give another change of scenes to-night, and, as the time of closing here draws near, those who have not visited this really artistic treat should do so at once. The Hawke's Bay Trotting Club will hold their autumn meeting to-morrow, and there seems every reason to believe that a good day's sport will result. The acceptances arc good, and the course is in excellent condition. It is confidently expected that there will be a record attendance. A very close and interesting bowling match took place yesterday between the Bluff Hill and Hastings Clubs, the former winning by four points. The scores were : Bluff Hill, No. 1 Rink (Hansard, Sweetapple, I'latford, Laing, s.), ol against Hastings' 22 (Reynolds, Clarke, Goldsmith, Maddison, s.) ; No. 2 Rink 25 (Simpson, Crowley, T. Balfour,llcvans, s.) against oO (M'llroy, Tyerman, Ilaszard, Newman, s.). The body of Mrs Bertha Jennings, of Ivihikihi, was found in the Mangahoe river, near Kihikihi, Auckland. Pheasants and other feathered game are being rapidly exterminated in the Carterton district by stoats and weasels. Robert M'Master lias been committed for trial at Auckland on a charge of unlawful assault on Edward Thomas Russell by stabbing him in the face with a billiard cue. At an inquest at Otakeho, near Hawera, into the recent lire at Carey's store ,£the jury returned a verdict of incendiarism against a person or persons unknown. They also added a rider that the stock, buildings, Ac., were over-insured.

Herald I learn unoflicially from Wellington that Parliament, which was prorogued till to-day, will definitely meet in about a fortnight's time, and that it is pretty well settled that the Premier goes to England. The House will most probably bo called together in August. At the criminal session Auckland John Stewart and William Atkins, charged with picking a pocket at the Kllerslie racecourse, got two years' imprisonment each, detective Jones, of New Sooth Wales, who is in Auckland in connection u ith Carre ill's ca.se. deposed that lie knew both prisoners well as expert pickpockets. St Patrick's J>ay was celebrated at Auckland by the Irish portion of thu community with great enthusiasm ; UHX) left the cM.v and intermediate stations for Ngoruawahia j-fj*ntta. An immense crowd gathered from all parts of Waikato, and altogether live or .six thousand were present on the arrival of the Auckland train. Hibernian sports m the domain were attended by about 0000, and the "Catholic schools festival by about '2OOO children. At a banquet given in Wellington last evening to Volunteer Arthur Balhnger, winner of the champion ride belt, the Premier was among the guests, and. in the course of n speech, he heartily supported th« propositi to send a Maori contingent to take part m the record reign celebrations. An extraordinary Gazette was issued to-day proroguing Parliament to April 2.
Two drunks were arrested this morning. They were brought before Mr J. Arnott, J.P., this afternoon, and were convicted and discharged.
The insurance on Mr Garnett's building and contents which were destroyed by tire yesterday amount to £825. House, £550 ; furniture and personal effects, £250 ; organ, £25. All in the New Zealand Insurance Company.
In their second innings the Hawke's Bay made 100, Taranaki thus winning by an innings and 42 runs. Lusk I'2. Cato 21, and Canning 16.
A man named William Lake was arrested on the racecourse this morning, being caught in the act of picking the pocket of a Maori woman. She handed him over to the police, and he will appear before the Court to-morrow.
The Hibernian social, which was held in St. Patrick's Schoolroom last evening, was a great success from every point of view. From a social stand point the function was everything that could be desired as the enjoyment was intense and it is understood that those responsible for the affair will have a substantial balance to their credit. Miss Caulton and Mr A. King supplied the music and Mr T. Bishop acted as M.C. A splendid supper was provided by the ladies. Several Masterton orchadists have decided to cut down the whole of their apple trees in order to get rid of the codlin moth. Prospectors who have been at work in the Wairarapa report striking a gold-bear-ing reef at Woodside, two nile from Greytown. Color of gold was also found in a shaft sunk in the main street of Greytown. Since Tuesdays auction 225 acres of the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company's land in block 1, Arawaru, have been sold privately for £1667, making the total sales £10,048. Yesterday morning at Hawera, a girl named Mary Brown was preparing the breakfast when her clothes caught fire, and she was fearfully burned and suffered a great shock. She was taken to the hospital, and lies in a precarious condition. The steamer Charles Edward, when dancing about off Westport last week, waiting for a chance to enter the river, was reduced to such commons for fuel that the engineer had to draw upon cargo to the extent of 100 tons coke. Her position had there been no combustible cargo is not pleasant to contemplate. The Nelson Supreme Court opened yesterday before Mr Justice Denniston. There were only two criminal cases. In the case of John Grooby, charged with killing his wife, last September, with an axe, at Pangatotara, the jury decided that the prisoner was unfit to plead, as he was insane, and the Judge ordered him to be kept in the asylum during the Colonial Secretary's pleasure. The dead body of a newly-born infant, prematurely born, was found in a box at the residence of James Satherlv, a farmer, near Motueka, Nelson, on Tuesday. The child had been dead abont three days. An inquest was opened, and adjourned owing to the precarious state of the supposed mother, who was recently employed as a housemaid at the Ship Hotel at the port. She left there a fortnight ago, and went home to Motueka.
At a Prohibition meeting the Rev. F. W. Isitt said he had seen more drunkenness in Wellington in three days than in three weeks in Christchurcli. Four women had been seen that morning (Wednesday) hovering round the church, and the previous day another had to bo taken away in a wheelbarrow. Two other speakers made similar remarks upon the prevalence of drunkenness in Wellington. The Post takes the speakers to task, and declares the assertions a libel 011 the city. This year, from the Mat aura district alone, it is estimated lhat upwards of a million and a hall rabbits will be exported for human consumption. When these figures (says the Ensign) are considered with those relating to the scores of thousands of hapless bunnies that fall victims to poison or other death-dealing agencies, it will be seen that the rabbit pest must go on decreasing, until at last it becomes a thing unknown. The Premier has received copies of despatches from Sir W T . Maegregor warning diggers against New Guinea. The Lieu-tenant-Governor says : —" Only young and healthy men should try prospecting at any time. For a man that has no means at his disposal this prospecting is practically impossible, for the necessary outfit of a man would require from X'.">o to .t'l()0 to be ehieily expended in provisions, carriers, and medicine. Magistrates will not engage carriers to men that cannot guarantee the wages of the carriers, and the Government cannot furnish carriers to prospectors."
