In .the vitrol throwing case againstThomas Carroll at the Supreme Court, Jewell, cross-examined by llr Cooper, said, when (lie acid was thrown he, Jewell, had a revolver strapped under the back of his coat. lie did not make any motion that would lead accused to believe he was going to draw it out, He had no recollection of Miss Lake pulling it out of his hand and putting it under the pillow. He knew before he came to Auckland that .Miss Lake was spoken of as Carroll's wife and was known as Mrs Carroll. Knew she came over from Sydney as Mrs Carroll, but did not know they were engaged to be married. lie knew that she and Carroll bud been living as man and wife for a long time. That was the claim Carroll made on Miss Lake when they were talking things over at I'aeroa. Knew Carroll was staying at Miss Luke's mother'* house, and that they had arranged to get married. Witness told Miss Imke to tell Carroll she would marry him to gain time, intending to take her away ami marry him herself. The mother knew .Miss Lake was going away with witness.
