Miscellaneous extract matter appears on our fourth page. A meeting of the Carlton Lodge of Druids is called for to-night at 8 o'clock. Messrs Hannah and Co. announce elsewhere a great " l'rice Squeezing Sale " for the race week. A meeting of owners of allotments in the Hastings Cemetery is called for Tuesday, '2:3 rd March, to elect trustees. A son of Mr Elliott, Ilavelock road, had the misfortunate yesterday of being thrown #rom a horse, and had a small bone in his wrist broken. To-morrow evening will witness the opening of the present season of the Miss Ada Pelroy Company, when a bumper house is assured to welcome the reappearance of these established favorites. The Wellington papers have been flattering in their criticism while the company has been in the Empire city. To-night, and for this night only, Carl Hertz will make his appearance at the Princess Theatre in his great illusionary acts, which are admitted to be the best ever shown in New Zealand. The real Cinematograph with a large number of views specially sent from London will also be shown. We anticipate a bumper house and a delighted audience. Owing to the immense success of the views of the Passion Piny at the Chiaroscurama last night it will be shown again this evening. The place was so crowded that numbers could not have a chance of being present. Amongst the visitors were some of the local clergymen, and they expressed themselves as highly gratified witli what they had seen, both from a religious and artistic point of view. A nasty accident occurred to a blacksmith named J. Paddy at Tomoana freezing works on Saturday. Paddy was working at a drilling machine worked by steam and desiring to throw the machinery nut of gear he leant across but in endeavoring to remove the belt his shirt sleeve got caught in one of the small cogs with the result that his arm was drawn between the teeth and the muscles were severely lacerated. It will be a considerable time before he Can resume his work. Mr I'robasco, the enterprising circus proprietor, will be remembered by many horsemen us the trainer and owner of that wonderful talking horse Mahomet. The southern papers says that Mr I'robasco has outdone any of his previous undertakings in the training of the present school of ponies ami big horses, some twenty in number. After a short season of live months' training Mr lYobasco gave a private exhibition, and astonished all present with the truly wonderful perform' ances of the ponies after sueh a short training. Mdlle. St. Orme, the charming Mexican rider gives a grand display of grace and nerve such as is often seen along the Kin Grande in her native country. The Australian Nuggets, us acrobats and tumblers, are considered not to have their ei|Ual in the colonies ; whilst Miss Kmery'w balancing tricks art' very graceful. Tiie Sahation Army held harvest thanksgiving services at the local barracks yesterdity. Tile building was tastefully decorated for the occasion with colored papers, while a large table, running almost across lite nwm, was heavilv laden with the good things of the earth. Burglaries are reported in the Wellington papers as being of nightly occurrence in that city. Hayes, the much-travelled circus proprietor, died in the Freeinantle Hospital on Feb. 11th. Mr Dennett will hold an auction sale at his rooms to-morrow of miscellaneous goods, which are to be sold without reserve.

The Hastings Band gave several selection in the main street on Saturday night. The music was well rendered and highly appreciated by a large number of listeners. Mr R. Winsley, has been appointed caterer by the H.B. Jockey Club for the Cup meeting this week. It is evident t-liat the first-class luncheon supplied by Mr Winsley at the Trotting Club's meetings were " spotted by some of the H.B.J.C. officials and they have wisely secured his services. Stick to it Hastings, you are at last cutting the apron strings that has so long bound you to the sea-side village. The Jockey Club has at last given Hastings a chance—Band last meeting ; tucker this—"a thing it has never done before." Mr Hughes recently bought a heifer from Mr J. Erven aged one year and ten months, which, after being slaughtered, showed a kidney weighing 601bs. Mr Hughes has had a long experience in butchering, but he has never met a similar case.
