Admiral Bridge, in an interview with regard to the defences of New Zealand, said their condition was much the same as the other colonies, from the striking insutlic-iency of the men. The defences were in admirable order, beautifully kept, and reflecting the highest credit 011 those in charge, but one was perpetually haunted by the question, " What is the good of all this if there is not enough of proper men to man them'?"
