Jones, who was brought from Hobart to Napier for wife desertion, w"'l be brought before the court there today. Yesterday was an unfortunate day for the butchers, the weather and thunder having turned all the meat in stock putrid, and the smell at night in some instances was very high. Messrs Whitehead Bros., photographers, will close their establishment in Heretaunga road on February 2.3. Those who intend to patronise the firm are requested to make arrangements at once. Good work is being turned out and the very low rates of 7s 6d per doz. is charged for cabinet photos. The FuHer Myriorama Company appeared again at the Princess Theatre on Saturday night and gave a most successful entertainment, the subject of the views being principally illustrative of " Life in London.'' The heavy rain which fell all the evening had an effect in reducing the number present, but those who came went away highly delighted. Last evening the same company gave a sacred concert to a excellent audience, and every item was done fv 1 ! justice to.
Messrs Kirkcaldie and Stains announce in another p;"t of this issue the continuation of the great sale of Messrs Neal and Close's drapery stock during the present months. Still further reductions are being made, and it is the firm's intention to sell the balance at landed cost. Visitors to Napier will do well to visit this establishment, as they may rely upon the quality of the goods offered, coming, as they do, from eminent English warehouses. During the continuance of these reductions, all sales will be for cash onlv.
Owing to the heavy downpour of rain yesterday morning the church parade of the Volunteers had to be abandoned. The men remained in camp, and during the afternoon were visited by a number of ladies, who provided the officers and men with afternoon tea and refreshments. As the weather has kept the corps from getting as much military exercise as was anticipated, it is now proposed that the camp will not break up till Thursday, and that special work shall be done on Wednesday afternoon, which, being a halfholiday, will allow of all being present. Despite the bad weather the child ven rolled up to the matinee at Bernard's circus on Saturday afternoon, and childlike enjoyed everything they saw, especially the performance of la petite Ethele and the balancing of Baby Trevoe, a little thing of about 3 summers. Of course the dogs, monkeys, and trained ponies pleased them immensely. At the evening performance there was a large audience despite the rain, and if the weather had been fair the tent would have been crowded. The circus opens again to-night, and to all those who wish a good night's entertaiument for a small figure, we can heartily commend the show. A very distressing accident happened at Napier on the French steamer l iado on Saturday afternoon to Captain Bauret, who was standing on the deck superintending the loading of his vessel with timber. A sling of timber was being hoisted on board, when it swung round towards the winch where Captain Bauret was overlooking the hold, and struck him on one of his legs, just below the knee, causing a compound fracture. Dr. Bernan was telephoned for, and lost no time in reaching the ship, and having temporarily bandaged the leg, ordered the captain's removal to the hospital. The weather during the last few days has been of a phenomnial character for this part of the colony. On Saturday heavy rain fell at intervals, which became heavier as the night progressed, and yesterday morning culminated with a terrific thunderstorm, which aroused and alarmed a good number of the inhabitants. The rain fell in torrents, and in some instances accompanied with hail showers, which sounded on the iron roofs as if pebbles were falling, l'eal after peal of thunder continued, accompanied with vivid lighting, and altogether the effect was very alarming on a good number of persons. The rain soon tilled the drains to overflowing, and the streets became like a lake. Shortly after noon the rain ceased and the streets began to assume their normal appearance, except in the low lying streets, some of which had a good depth of water on them last night. The rivers and creeks quickly rose, and the Karamu Creek was impassable early in the day. Comparatively little damage was done in town, but a number of the fiirmers suffered severely through damage to their crops, especially in tin; loss of seed. At Napier several houses were flooded, and a new brick chimney attached to the house of Mr Heading, senr., was struck by 'lightning and shattered into fragments ; as also the chimney of Mr W. 1.. White, which was similarly dealt with. How the inmates escaped with their h\es is a miracle, as in one room where three of the family slept a marble vase was i
smashed to atoms, u mirror was thrown from the dressing table, and the room filled with sulphurous fumes. The ruroro rose so suddenly that Mr Grit Fen, contractor for the protective works, had his plants all swept away. including a 7 h.p. steatu engine, pile driver, punts, Ac. The other rhers were flooded, but not above the bridge*. At the Christchurch Polo Club's sports on the Agricultural Show Grounds on Saturday, Mr Beauchamp Lane, secretary, was thrown from his horse in a race and seriously injured, breaking his collarbone. In connection with the accident to Mr O'Meara, M.H.R., for Pahiatua, who fell with his bicycle over the Manawatu Gorge, it is stated that Mr O'Meara had a miracnlous escape with his life. If he had rolled three feet further he must have been drowned, and in any case it is a wonder the life was not battered out of him. There was good weather for the athletic championship meeting on Saturday, when the finals for the possession of the banner were decided. Auckland ended with a big lead, scoring 102 points; Wanganui, 86; "Wellington, 8; Hawke's Bay, 2. Holder, of Wanganui, whose performances were a prominent feature of the meeting, put up a world's record in the 440 yards hurdles, the time being 58 4-sth see.
