SPORTING NEWS.

[By Gipsy Grand.] The Saint paid £3 2s in the Hack Hurdles at Gisborne, The Australian mare Treason is said to possess a great dash of pace. She is by Trenton from the Newmarket winner Sedition. Five Australian horses started in the Viceroy Cup, won by Quiver. Three of the number tilled the places. Nobleman and Jack 'o Lantern were fourth ajvi t'.ith. The two English horses—Sprigjply and Viargo—were a long way out orfihtt tiie finish. Revolt, who dropped dead in the hurdle race at Wellington this afternoon, was by the Traducer horse Treason from Mischief, and therefore full-brother to Rebellion and Revolution. He was a fast horse on the flat as a three and four year old, and afterwards scored several times over hurdles. He won the corresponding race last year to that in which he' died to day. Two very exciting trials took place on Wednesday on the local racecourse between the well-known prads The Caretaker and the Old Man. The 'go ' was kept very dark, and only a few persons closely connected with the respective stables were present. The first trial was over a mile on the grass. The first stripped was the Old M-an who looked extremely well with the pyjamas up. He jumped about the lawn like a two-year-old and once or twice gave the boy a tough time holding on. The Caretaker was then brought out of the box and the green jacket hoisted. He looked as lit as Ovide Musin's fiddle and took things very cool. After the usual ' prelim.' the prads jumped away to a good start. The pair raced to the bend with The Caretaker next to the rails. At the six furlong post Old Man ran a bit wide, in fact he being such a straight goer he took no notice of the turn. At last the boy managed to turn the old grey's head in the direction of The Caretaker, who had, by this time, gained a lead. The Old Man now set his jaws to ding-dong go, and a the railway bend was overhauling the green jacket in every stride. The Caretaker entered the straight with a length's advantage with the Old Man going strong. The whips were now brought in requisition and the pair raced up the straight neck-and-neck, and the excitement sent the thermometer up 20 degrees. On, on, they came, stride for stride, and breath for breath, locked together. ''A dead heat" seemed inevitable a dozen strides from the post; but no! the Old Man here mado one gallant and final effort and won by a short whisker, amidst loud cheers. The pair wore brought back to the sheds where scrapers and rubbers were freely applied. The second trial over six furlongs turned out a good thing for The Caretaker, for shortly after the barrier was raised, Old Grey pulled up dead lame, having broken down rather badly. He was subsequently carted away in a cab to the Pacific stables where the joys of the first trial and the sorrows of the second were doctored. The Old Man is now on the retired list and may not sport silk for some considerable time. The Caretaker is none the worse for his efforts and is a regular attendant on the track of a morning.
