SPORTING NEWS.

[By Gifsy Grand.] Ebor scored another victory yesterday in England by winning the Castle Steeplechase. is his third win within a fortnight. Norton also won the Eghain Steeplechase at Windsor yesterday. The death is announced of the brood mare Virginia Water (Traducer—Wave). Mr Gollan's Mousqueton (Mousquetaire —Miss Dargon) and Wakelyn (Dreadnought—Lady Florin) are to be nominated for the Britannia Steeplechase, of £SOOO, and the Britannia Hurdle Race, of'-fiSOop, to be run at Warwick, England, of 1900. May the youngsters rStrin Percy Martin's charge capture one. if not both, of the events for their plucky owner, is my wish. Goosander, Miss Rawdon, and Atlielene have visited the Traducer horse Natator. St Laura's name appears in the list of acceptors. This is somewhat strange, seeing that her acceptance reached Wellington after the closing hour. Eight horses have finally paid up for the Wellington Cup, the only ones to withdraw being the Karamu pair—Daredevil and Trentalto, and the Christchurch horse Quiltiri. The South Island will be represented by Skirmisher only, and, on recent running, the son of Vanguard has a right good chanca. The Saints will interest Auckland ; the Maori-owned Rangipuhi will carry the Rangitikea coin ; the Hutttrained pair—Strathbraan and Leda—are the Empire City's contribution ; and Mars and Douglas will run in Hawke's Bay's interest. The last-named is noniina'llv favorite, and there can be but little doubt that he will be in the front division at the paying end of the race. My final selection will appear on Monday. Orion's Belt, Dotti'cll, Waterstonc, The Brook, Douglas and Torpina left by the express this morning for the Wellington meeting. The other H.B. horses will depart on Monday. Sternchaserand Mousquetaire are advertised for sale in England as stud horses. The Skipper, who ran third in the Melbourne Cup, has beeu shipped to India. Quiver, a daughter of Trenton, won the Indian Viceroy Cup. Fortunatus was second and Couralle third. In the Maribyrnong Hurdle Race on Dec. 28th Hero, by Gipsy King, dead j heated with Boomah. Hero carried 10.9. The Nursery at the A..T.C. December meeting was won by Holbrook, the son of Locliiel and Hussy. The Idler, by Bundora, ran second in the Adelaide Welter on Dec. 28th. Broken Hill won the principal race at Adelaide on New Year's Day. Div., £2
