RACING ITEMS. [By Gii-sy Grand.] At Ashurst to-day Clieve won the Trial Hurdles, I)iv. £(i 4s. Marvellous won the Guineas. Div. £2 Is. The Flying was won by Guardsman. J)iv., .£■"> 16s. After going to press yesterday the following additional Palmerston results came to hand: —Presidents—Trentalto, Blarney, Quiltiri. Lorelei and Strathbraan also started. Time, 2min 11 2-sth see. Div. £B. Steer Shot won the Hack and paid Farewell —Douglas, Crimson Streak, Strathbraan. [No time or div. wired] Damien won the Sydney Summer Cup which was run yesterday. The Taranaki Hack Derby was won by Kahoi, with Lubra and Guardfish in the places. Div., ,£l3 3s. At Westport on Saturday Johnny Faa won a double ; Sea Breeze won the Cup, and Minerva defeated Couranto in the Hurdles, Arquebus, Slaiden, and Geraint filled the places in the iteefton Cup on Saturday. Clarence won the Hurdles, and Slaiden the Midland I'ail way Handicap, The steeplechaser Welcome Kate died last week. Bombshell ran dead last in his first race at Gathwiek, England, last month. Mr Connop's Hobart lias developed into a beautiful horse and shows a great many of his sire's points. The son of Cuirassier and Tasmania is now in steady work ill view of the 11.8. Stakes. On Tuesday last preferred to the growing practice of omitting to wire the full lists of acceptances of race from different parts of the colony, at the same time quoting the case of Markinch in the Christmas Handicap at Auckland. Sporting readers will observe that my remarks were by no means far astray, for the horse referred to won the race and paid «£6 los. The matter of handicapping horses appears to be attracting considerable attention amongst horseowners at present, with the expression of considerable amount of dissatisfaction. Perhaps the following resolution which was moved by the English Jockey Club on Dec. 7th may be brough into effect in New Zealand with a hope of bettering the present situation : " No handicapper shall hold any other office at a meeting, nor handicap at any other meeting held during the same week, except by express permission of the stewards of the Jockey Club in case of emergency. He must attend the meeting either personally or by licensed deputy. The name of the jliaudicapper attending the meeting shall appear in the Calendar containing the report."
