The second round of the chess championship commenced this morning, and at the luncheon adjournment the result of the play was as follows : Hookham v. Guerson (Sicilian defence). The former ha, I a piece to the good for some time, but the Aucklander regained it, and the game appears even.
Anderson v. Meldrum (French defence). An intensely exciting game was won on the 2iird move hv the former.
Cocks v. Barnes (French defence). Cocks won the exchange oil the lath move, but the game is still open. Edmonds v. Gilford (French defence). Edmonds got a strong attack but failed to make the most of it. The game appears equal.
Miller v. Mason (French defence) An even game. Pleasants had a bye.
