In the course of a lecture atDunedin 011 " Woman's Position in the Twentieth Century." Mrs. Burn thus trenchantly referred to present day sham and hypocrisy : —" How many men will stretch out a hand to rise a fallen woman ? How many will even refrain from joining in the cackle of delight which greets her lapse from virtue —so-called respectability ? How many men will risk the silly laugh of their companions by offering to carry some old woman's bundle or a child's '? That would be chivalry ! But no! it is all melted down to lifting hats, and opening of gates, and carrying of cloaks of pretty maids, handing to carriages, offering them an arm to cross the ball-room. Chivalry ! Tush ! the sooner this mockery is
