MANAWATU RACES. The following are the acceptances for the principal events at the Manawatu
RACING ITEMS. [By Gir-sv Grand.] Lotion was scratched to day for the Auckland Cup. The stallion Tattler died last week in the Wairai-apa, He was the sire of Tuliitarata, Humor, Comet, [Speculator and Chatterbox. The hurdler Touch struck a fence the other morning while being schooled on the Egmont racecourse with such force that he broke one of his forelegs at the knee. The horse « as immediately shot. Mars has advanced to 8 to 1 for the Auckland Cup. Last year's winner, Anita, is quoted at £0 to 1. Marechal Neil nnd Ballyool.y returned to Auckland from Sydney yesterday. I venture to say that there has never before been so much bungling over the list of acceptances as has been in the case in connection with the present Auckland races. Every day since the acceptances the man at the wires lias been busy with such messages as : •• So-and-sowasomitted from the list o? acceptances for such-and-such handicap." This morning word was received that Markineh (7st) was omitted from the Christmas Handicap. It is now quite reasonable to suppose that one or two horses will be omitted from races which they may possibly win. If such should turn out to be the case backers at a distance will have all the worst of it. It will be remembered with regret that Chris was " omitted " from the race he won at Auckland and paid a substantial dividend. Not a few will also remember the Kingsman case at last Wellington meeting. There is more in this business than appears on the surface. TBAINING NOTES. [By Telegraph.] (Per Press Association.) Auckland, This day. Interesting work took place at Ellerslie this morning. St. Paul opened the ball by compassing the Cup distance, Pirate assisting for the first mile, and Ivnight of Athol the last five furlongs of the journey. From tho way St. Leger's son shapes, it can safely be said that his many admirers ought to be on best terms with themselves. Markineh galloped a mile alone, and Antares did likewise over a mile and a half. Coronet, with Tamaki and Minor for companions, galloped a strong six furlongs on the course proper. The two-year-old went well. Pegasus and Mantle were associated in a gallop of a mile and five furlongs on the tan, the mare having three lengths advance at the finish. Doris spurted live furlongs. St. Clements galloped seven furlongs alone. Mahaki, with a big weight up, was restricted to half-pace work, finishing up fast. Mars and Dauntless got through a strong round in company, when the three-year-old stopped, Solitaire assisting Mars to complete another half mile. The gallop was a good one, and Mars made many friends thereby. Multiform and Anniversary were companions in a sharp run of five furlongs on the course proper, Mr Stead's colt racing clear away from his opponent at the finish. Gold Medallist went over six furlongs in a taking manner. This colt is a free goer. Defiant appeared to have as much to say as Sir Launcelot over a similar distance. There was little to choose between Epaulet and Tire at the finish of a onceround gallop on the tan. Haria galloped a mile and three-quarters having Lufra to assist the last part of the journey. Haria finished well. Nestor galloped the Cup distance on the course proper. Miss Nelson joined in the last mile, and Nestor finished up his task well. Gipsy Prince and St. Simon got through strong work over a mile and a half. Levanter and Kingswood did similar
