> —. Mr A. 1.. D. Fraser will address the electors at To Ante on Friday evening. Captain Russell will address the Hastings electors in the Princess Theatre 011 Friday evening. A meeting of the Hastings Riiles is called for to-morrow night for the purpose of electing a second lieutenant. The racers Rainbow and Orion's Belt went through to Wellington this morning to fullil their Exhibition meeting engagements. The .Juvernile dance in connection with the Hibernian Society last evening was a great success. There were about thirty couples present, find Miss Shanly supplied excellent music. Mr Fraser worked off a smart thing at the Kaikora meeting last evening. The hall in which spoke is the meeting place of the Independent Order of Rechabites, and above the stage is displayed the initials I. 0. R. He made a great hit by interpreting the letters " I or Russell," and the feeling of the meeting certainly seemed to be in favor of '* I." The tickets for the Grand Scenic Concert to be given in the Princess Theatre to-morrow night are going off rapidly, and there is every prospect of a bumper house. The entertainment should prove of especial value to young people, who will see something brighter than they have gever witnessed before. The older generation will attend in scores, for a rare treat is promised. The programme consists of some gems, and the effects to be given to the various items will rather open the eyes of Hastings theatre-goers.
Speaking at the laying of the foundation stone of a church Jit Woolston, Canterbury, the Rev. \V. Morlev dealt with some interesting statistics in connection with the growth and spread of Wesleyan Methodism in the Australasian colonies, and mentioned that the first minister of that denomination was on his way to New South Wales at the date of the Battle of Waterloo, in 1815. At the present time there were 1576 Wesleyan churches in Australasia, 1600 other preaching places, 531 ordained ministers, and 2676 preachers. 15,500 church members, and 145,000 Sunday school scholars. Referring to the missionary work of the church, he showed how in the South Sea Islands, most of which were half a century ago peopled by cannibals and murderers of the most savage type, there are now 1016 Wesleyan churches, with 578 other places of worship in the same connection, and 41,000 members of the church, with 41,000 Sunday school scholars. The Royal Hotel, Woodend, was broken into on Sunday morning and whisky and other articles amounting in value to .£"2B stolen. There is no clue to the robbers. At Feilding on Friday a settler was fined in a nominal amount for neglecting to brand his sheep with his registered brand immediately after shearing. Defendant said the sheep had come from Auckland unbranded.
"William "Wilcox, who was sent out from London at a salary of ,£'lsoo per annum, to manage the Hoine Consolidated mines, has been charged at the Coolgardie Police Court with vagrancy. He was liberated on promising to leave the town. It is stated that the directors in London have cabled cancelling the appointment.
The Carterton Observer says : —Toi Natanahira was mixing toxa to poison the rabbits on his property at- Gladstone. Two children playing near ate some of the poison, and made themselves seriously ill. Dr Robertson went out from Carterton and attended them. One child has got over it all rij;ht, but the other is still verv much swollen and ill.
