XI']WHAVEN'S DERBY. On the morning of the Y.I'.C. Derby the following from the pen of " Javelin " appears in the Melbourne Age : With rumors rather hazy, I've been driven nearly crazy, Both the racing and the training are erratic, Beating Hopscotch in a canter (no suspicion of a schlanter), Of course Newhaven's backers were emphatic. He must win it in a walk, not a bit of use to talk Of Besolute, The Officer, or Coil, Let 'em one and all believe, they've something up their sleeve, They might as well just save themselves the toil. But that Guineas win of Cook's, which delighted all the books, Gave "Walter and his patrons quite a shock, Some discovered that Newhaven after ail was but a craven. While some, who dropped their money, blamed the jock. And what was still more sad, he drove Walter nearly mad By galloping so badly on the track, One morning, that a tout was heard to bellow out, "' E couldn't win with nuthink on 'is back! " So he went to 3 to 1, and every little "gun" Who bets upon the pavement gave liim " rats," But Xewhaven all the while, with a quiet, equine smile, Soliloquised, '• Well, what a lot of flats ?" And a week before the race, putting on a bit of pace, He galloped like he could have done before, And the touts, with strange grimaces, screwed up their classic faces, On finding he was neither soft no sore. Eemember what I say when Newhaven wins to-day, And as you see him gallop past the post, You'll hear the backers' cheers, while Jerusalem, in tears, Will cry aloud, "He had us all on toast."
