The Hawke's Bay Seat.
THE LIBERAL CANDIDATE
For the past few days numerous deputations have waited upon Mr A. L. D. Fraser, asking him to allow himself to be nominated for the Hawke's Bay seat in the Liberal interest. To all these entreaties Mr Fraser has turned a deaf ear, but at the request of influential Government supporters he has consented to become a candidate. It is explained that Mr Fraser was in no way anxious to contest the seat, as he could not afford to leave his business for the remuneration offered New Zealand politicians ; but he considered that there is a time in one's life when one should rise above the feeling of selfishness and egoism and work for the good of one's fellows. As there were so many electors anxious to see Mr Fraser returned he reluctantly consented, andis now in the hands of the electors. He will commence his campaign immediately. In the meantime the Liberals are at work to secure his return and committees are to-day being formed in the chief centres. The Hon. Jas. Carroll has expressed his pleasure at Mr Fraser's announcement, and he will have the support of the Government in the struggle.
