SPORTING NEWS.

[By Gipsy Grand.]

The Possible left for Christcliurch on Saturday by the Te Anau. Chris is under orders tor his home at Tc Mahanga. Saracen won the Ohoka Handicap on the 16tli inst, carrying 9st 4lb in a field of three. Geo Hill, the owner of Marvel, was not expected to live more than a few days, when the last mail left Sydney. Three horses remaining in the Derby and three in the Oaks are on the unpaid forfeit list. Before any one of them can start his owner will have to pay something like £2OO. A rather curious thing about the hack -* race which was won by First Result at W anganui last week is tire time recorded for the six furlongs, viz : Imm lfjsoc. This time has been telegraphed all over the colony, and if it is correct (which I very much doubt) First Result has established an Australian record. Loyalty's record for the distance is Imin 14sec. Gough, the jockey, is among the many who reckon that Newhaven will win the Derby and Cup. All the same, the chestnut colt isn't a. more likely Cup-winner oil paper than was Loyalty m Tarcoola's year. C. Mitchell received a severe shaking by Tally-ho's fall at Wanganui. He was dragged some distance before his leg was freed from the iron. Once more the whirligig of time has brought us within two weeks of the New Zealand Cup. and, naturally enough, as the event draws nearer excitement: grows more intense. Almost all the horses engaged in the 16 furlong sprint are now at Riccarton, undergoing their iinal preparation. Of the number remaining in the race that turned up trumps during the campaigns of the past few weeks are : Saracen. Casket-, Xgatuere, The Shrew. Lotion. Day Star, and Lord llosslvn. The victories of The Shrew and Lotion stand out meritoriously, inasmuch as their performances have been consistent, and, with a considerable reduction in weight to that carried to victory, their Cup prospects look well. Ngatuere, on his W anganui display, maybe set down as the pick of the West Coast division. Saracen easily disposed of Camel and l'actolusm the Ohoka Handicap a couple of weeks ago. The son of St George carried almost a stone more than his weight in the Cup. I fancy he will be the pea from Hobbs's stable. Day Star's victories are too well-known to require recapitulation. Reports from headquarters concerning the Castor colt, are causing his backers some anxiety. If lie starts for the Cup I fully expect to see him beaten. The Dunedin colt, Lord Rosslyn, calls for more than passing notice. It may interest many to learn that this colt opened his season by winning the same race as did Euroclydon last year—Spring Handicap, Oamaru. Casket captured the big event on the second day, and showed plainly that he still retains his brilliancy. Another recent winner that is entitled to mention is Captive. The form displayed by the son of Cnptivator at the North Otago winter meeting and in the Timaru Cup stamps him 18 carat. With 7st 21b he is fairly chucked in. and whatever beats him should win. I will have more to say about the Cup in a future issue.
