NAPIER NOTES.

FFkoji On; Own Cor, respondent.!

Napier, October 23

The funeral of the little girl Helen Chalmers, who was fatally burned on "Wednesday night, took place yesterday and was largely attended by children from all the schools in Napier and at the Port.

Yesterday was the anniversary of the opening of tlic Glasgow wharf. During the year Kit vessels arrived at the wharf. Twenty of them were obliged to leave and discharge into lighters, and an unrecorded number had to clear out without discharging at all. At the S.M. Court this morning William Higgms, alias O'Brien, &c., and •John Walsh were convicted of vagrancy. The former was sentenced to three months and the latter to six weeks. Charges of burglary against the pair were withdrawn failing evidence. Mr Von liaast, a well-known local yachtsman, has been speculating in an oil steamer for use in the inner harbor. It is to arrive from Auckland on Saturday. At the usual meeting of the Xapier Fire Brigade last night the following resolution was proposed and carried unanimously :

•' That a vote of thanks be accorded to Mr F. Pirani, M.H.Ii., for his action with reference to the United Fire Brigade Association subsidy and free passes, and we trust that he will not again have an opportunity of voting on the question." This is in consequence of the determined stand taken by Mr Pirani in Parliament against the question of a subsidy to firemen to attend conferences and competitions.

The Sunflower Minstrels gave an enjoyable concert in the presence of a large attendance of members at the Working Men's Club last night. The Xapier I'itfe Club open the season to-morrow, and will shoot for trophies. The Xapier Sailing Club has resolved to protest against (the proposed Order in Council compelling owners of yachts to carry life buoys. The stupidity of such an action is obvious. Captain Edwin prophesies a south-west gale with rain and heavy sea on the coast.
