Syi>xkv, <'cf. '!•!. News has kett received of the total wreck of the mission steamer Payspring oft Newcastle. New Caledonia. She left Sydney on the Otfi iust. with the usual c.ir<_ro of stores, ami struck a reef on the northern pari of the island about a week a>-ro. The captain, mate, ami seven of the Crew landed safely, but a boat with si\ of the crew is missing. It is not known whether the Payspring had any passengers. The vessel, which is quite new. cost about 1-1-2,000. and is believed to be only insured for half the value. Oct. 2-\. The Day Spring was insured for Only £2OOO and the cargo for £-300. It is thought probably tbut the missing boat will have landed at some of the adjacent islands. Later. The Pay Spring was commanded by Captain Bibbing, for many years connected with the command of the Melanesian Mission vessels, and he was a noted, able and careful ofticer Tith great experience in the island trade. It is considered probable that the disaster is due to -i mishap to th • machinery. ¥. K. llndder, a New Zeal&ader, was second officer of the vessel.
