Interprovincial News.

Devonport, Auckland, is forming a garrison artillery volunteer corps. John Allen, a carpenter, aged 51, was found drowned at a crossing of the Mangaeoneka river near Tekuni, in the King Country on Friday last. Miss Gillon, eldest daughter of the late Mr E. T. Gillon, died at Wellington yesterday morning. She had been suffering for some time from an affection of the heart. The Dunedin temperance political committee met on Saturday night, when nominations were received of candidates at the general election. Replies to questions sent by the committee were received from 21 probable candidates. The following are the nominations : —Dunedin City : F. M. Lester, W. Earnshaw, W. Hutchison, A. 11. Burton, D. Thompson, A. C. Begg, J. F. Arnold, H. E. Muir, J. Neagle, W. A. W. Wathen, J. A. Millar. Subject to a satisfactory reply to questions, for Caversham : Joseph Ilutton and John Taverner. Waikouwaite : A. Thomson and George J. Clark. The final selection is to be made on the 21th instant. The Dunedin boating season was opened on Saturday, but was interfered with by a strong wind, and the procession was therefore much reduced in size. Only one of the eight oar boats went out. Ernest Williams, second cook on the steamer Flora, was drowned at the Dunedin wharf at 11 o'clock on Saturday night. A step was heard on deck, then a splash in the water. A life buoy was thrown but the man was. unable to reach it. The body was got smartly out of the water but life was extinct.
