Collapse of a Prison Wall
A morning or two since the warders at the Pent ridge Prison, Melbourne, on proceeding to their stations near the quarries were surprised to find that the high Milestone wall forming the eastern boundary of the prison near the Merri Creek, and enclosing the quarries and tanneries, had entirely collapsed for a distance of 110 ft the stones being scattered on the ground, giving anyone free access into that portion of the prison grounds. The Governor, Colonel Bull, was promptly informed of the mishap, and the number of warders stationed there was largely increased to prevent the escape of any of the prisoners sent to work in the quarries and tanneries. It was found that its collapse was due to the absence of good foundations and to the defective workmanship in the construction. Mortar had been used ip erecting the outside shells of the wall, but the centre had been filled in with spawls without any mortar to speak of. It is estimated that it will cost £BOO to re-erect the wall, and the work is to be undertaken at once.
