The Coming Elections.
ARBITRATION IN TARANAKI. (By Telegraph.) [Special to Standard.] Wellington, This day. The principle of arbitration has been applied in a new manner in the Taranaki district. There were two candidates for the Egmont seat in the Opposition interests, and it was recognised that if both went to the poll the Ministerial candidate would probably be returned. The two men therefore decided to remit their chance to arbitration with the result that Mr Monkhouse, the County Chairman, was found to have the best show of election and Mr Elliot therefore retires and will staunchly support the other's candidature. Mr H. J. "Williams, secretary of the Licensed Victuallers Association, is spoken of as a candidate for Wellington City in the Government interest. It is stated here that Mr Rolleston will contest Riccarton in the Opposition interest.
