At an inquest at Auckland yesterday, on the seaman M'Leod of the barque Himalaya, a verdict of accidentally drowned was returned. Deceased was under the influence of liquor at the time of his death. Nothing further has transpired with regard to the specimens stolen from the Welcome Find, and the police are reticent. It is rumored they have a clue. The Minister of Justice has been communicated with to send the best detective talent available. At the Education Board yesterday a motion to allow all certificated teachers to inflict corporal punishment was rejected. Many complaints are made by the Maoris at Lake Rotorua that trout have destroyed all the koura and other native fish. A woman about 20 years of age named Wells was drowned at New Bighton this afternoon. The mail in charge of the pier saw her struggling in the water and made an attempt to get her out, but was unable to do so. At the Christehurch Magistrate's Court yesterday Adolpe Schlesinger, tobacconist, &c., was fined 40s and costs for selling goods on the' statutory half-holiday. The Canterbury Art Society has agreed to lend some of its pictures to the Wellington exhibition. At the Dunedin Education Board a report was submitted and adopted that after hearing evidence in connection with the charges of excessive punishment at the Forbury school, the Board has unanimously arrived at the conclusion that the charges of " severe cruelty and excessive punishment" having been inflicted by Mr Graham 00 his pupils are completely disproved by tl»® evidence.
