NAPIER NOTES.

[From Our Owx C'orf.espoxdemt.] Napiek, July 27. The chess match by telegraph between Napier v. Wauganui was continued on Saturday, and at the call of time the result was even on seven boards with <H boards each. The eighth board will lie referred to an expert for decision. Football on Saturday was played under difficulties, and the match between the Pirates and Napier was abandoned within a few minutes of "No side " by the only ball on the field bursting. The score then stood at Pirates'six and Napier three. Probably the game will have t© be played over again. The ground was heavy, and nothing brilliant was witnessed during the afternoon. The attendance was again poor. I am glad to hear that the J.D.0., the Harbor Board's combined dredge and tug, is to be used for towing vessels in and out of the Inner Harbor. She is also (I suppose I must say she, in spite of the masculine initals she bears) to have a stanchion fixed to her, in order that she may be able to tender vessels when the latter cannot come close up to the breakwater ; but can lie a short distance away. This is a very proper proceedings, a»d will no doubt be appreciated as it deserves. A meeting of Napier prohibitionists was held in the A theme urn on Saturday evening. A resolution was passed unanimously that the meeting, representing the temperance organisations of Napier, in view of the fact that the liquor option vote is to be taken at the general election, appeal to the Government on account of rumors of an early closing of Parliament this session, to make a determined effort to grant national option, and secure the enfranchisement of the people in the matter of general option before the forthcoming election. The Tasmania arrived yesterday evening from Wellington and attempted to go alongside the Glasgow Wharf. This was found to be impossible, as the " range " was too great, and the steamer finally drew off and anchored a short distance away. She was then tendered by a small steamer from the Spit. A big sea was breaking all day yesterday, and the breakwater was visited by a large number of people intent on the splendid sight always to be seen at the breakwater in heavy weather.

1 Towards high tide the waves came I over the breakwater and over the { Marine Pai'ade wall in fine style. The journal of the Department of Labor just to hand has the following particulars of the state of trades and labor in Hawkes' Bay. Napier : Building trades rather dull, several carpenters and painters having been registered as out of work; engineering trades fairly busy; retail trades, fair busiircss in most lines ; unskilled labor, still a number of men out of work ; eleven men sent to Government work during the month. Hastings—Building trade fairly busy, although many local carpenters find a difficulty in obtaining employment: retail trade'quiet; unskilled labor, a number of men have been■;observed on the road, though they have not kept about the township. Waipawa—No applications for work during the month, and very few swaggers observed on the road in this district. Ormondville—Work of all kinds slack, and likely to remain so during the winter.
