SOUTH AFRICAN AFFAIRS.

• ♦ A SURPRISE'ATTACK BY NATIVES. Cape Town, July 24. The Matabele attacked Laing's laager at daybreak, hoping to effect a surprise. They fought fiercely, but were repulsed with a loss of 90. The British loss was 13 killed and wounded, but the friendly natives lost 43. Twenty friendly natives have been killed at the Gwai river. Major-General Carrington will not again enter the Matappo Hills, but contemplates building forts with a view to surrounding the rebels. The rebels easily made their escape, though they showed signs of a desire to remain and fight. The struggle at Laing's laager lasted for five hours, the rebels coming within five yards of the defences.
