LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Mr Alex. Lean holds his usual weekly horse sale at Tattersalls, to-morrow. The weekly practice of the Amateur Operatic Society takes place this evening. The funeral of the late Jack Curtis took place in Woodville yesterday. In the Native Land Court this morning, before Judge Mair, the Poukawa cases were further adjourned until Monday next. Other business of minor importance was disposed of. The batteries in connection with the Kinetoscope have been recharged, and the marvel of the age is on exhibition again to-day. To avoid the crush, it is advisable for ladies and children to visit the show during the .afternoons. The usual monthly social in connection with the Good and Kind Society takes place to-night in St. Matthew's Hall. The arrangements for this function are unusually complete. The society are to entertain the members of the Napier Imperial Savage Club as visitors. Mr John Simpson, the popular proprietor of the Albert livery stables, was married to Miss Nellie Beatty, formerly of Hastings, in Napier yesterday. The bride and bridegroom left for Waipukurau to spend their honeymoon, and they carry with them the best wishes of all who know them. A correspondent, signing himself " Music," writes, hoping that "the gentleman in charge of the music for the Atlienteuin ball does not intend to go round and ask musicians to play for honor and glory, as was done on two previous occasions. In the case of a Hunt Club ball the music invariably cornea from Napier —paid for at highest rates,—but when the promoters of another ball do not intend to pay iliey get local talent." They stable at I'almerston North to-night and go on to the Empire City to-morrow. Glengarry also goes south by the next express. To-day a body of natives arrived by train having in their custody a European named John Nelson, whom they handed over to the police on the charge of assault with intent to murder. It appears that a native Hore, living at Puki Puki, caine into Hastings yesterday with his family instructing the man Nelson whom he employed to have food prepared on their return from town. These instructions, it appears, Nelson neglected to obey, and Hore on arriving home was annoyed and angry. Words ensued between the two, which resulted in Nelson being struck by the Maori. A struggle ensued in which the Native proved the stronger, and the pair were ultimately separated by the rest of the family who retired with Hore, leaving the other in possession of the whare. Further developments will transpire at the S.M. Court to-morrow inoining. The total population of the earth is estimatedat about 1,200,000,000 souls of whom 32,214,000 die annually—i.e., an average of 98,848 a day, 4,020 an hour, and 67 a minute. The annual number of births on the other hand, is estimated at 36,792,000 —i.e., an average of 100,800 a day, 4,200 an hour, and 70 a minute. Forty natives, or " niggers," as they are termed, were recently sentenced at Johannesburg to receive ten lashes with the " cat " for the offence of walking on the footpath the same as the colonists. Mr L. De Rotlichild's racehorses have this season annexed 13 two-vear-oldevents, being a striking contrast to the non-success of the Duke of Westminster's candidates. At Richmond, Victoria, a little girl named Alice Lynch was run over by a train and killed. It is stated that Mr J. H. Baker, Commissioner of Crown Lands for the Wellington district, is retiring from the public service.
