w Auckland, July 16. At the Supreme Court sessions hekl ill Auckland the Grand Jury made a strong presentment in favor of the promotion of Detective Chrystal, and their recommendation was cordially endorsed by Mr Justice Conolly. Since then the has been taken up by a number of influential people and a public petition promoted, urging Mr Chrystal's claims to promotion, has been signed by nearly a thousand citizens. Some gentlemen offered to subscribe a purse of sovereigns, but Mr Chrystal did not wish it. Part of the petition was forwarded to the Minister of Justice to-day. A young man named John Davis was killed at Corouiandei by the fall of a tree, and a verdict of accidental death was returned. It is stated that Mr -J. H. Baker, Commissioner of Crown Lands here, will shortly retire and take up his residence in England. In reply to the Lyttelton Harbor Board asking that concerted action be taken in connection with the other Harbor Boards of New Zealand to obtain by legislation an extension of the powers to license tugs and masters, the local Board has decided to assist in the direction indicated. The Wellington Meat Export Company's annual report recommends the declaration of a dividend of 8 per cent, and that £ 100 be carried forward. Mr F. Kelsall, secretary of the Bnmner Relief Committee, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, has sent the Premier a bank draft for £'d(>o 10s :->d, the balance of the amount collected in Kalgoorlie in aid of the fund, making a total, with £IOO already forwarded, of £4GO 10s 3d. In a letter accompanying the draft Mr Kelsall mentions that the Relief Committee was composed almost wholly of Maerilanders, and as an outcome of the Committee a New Zealand Democratic Association is to be formed at Kalgoorlie, the object being to discuss the latest social and political developments in New Zealand. Sir Robert Stout leaves for Auckland to-morrow on private business, and will be absent about a week. Di-xedix, July IG. There was a heavy fall of snow during the day. IxVERCAROILL, July 10. W. -T. Hynmann, storeman for J. S. Baxter, grocer, was fined Is and costs for supplying his customer with a bottle of schnapps. The Magistrate said he imposed only a nominal penalty, as he had derived no profit from the transaction, and the case appeared to be an isolated one.
