GENERAL ITEMS. New Plymouth, July 7. Three prisoners named Alley, Ludoghnski, and Aikman escaped from the custody of the warders to-day while engaged in excavating at the back of the gaol. Alley rushed a warder named OBeill}* and got possession of Ms rifle. While they were struggling Ludosheski seized the warder and Aikman struck him with a heavy stone, inflicting a nasty gash. The prisoners then made off, carrying the rifle with them. They are still at liberty, and have got into the back country. July 8. Hugh Foiej has been admitted to probation on a charge of embezzling moneys the property of the Singer Sewing Machine Company. "Wellington, July 8. The New Zealand Rugby Union has decided that the match. Queensland v. New Zealand be played at Wellington. At an inquest on the Wyiidhamstreet fire a verdict that the deceased James Hughes was first suffocated and then scorched and that there was no evidence to show how the fire had originated was returned. Mr George Fowlds has accepted a requisition from 640 electors to contest the city of Auckland at the general election as an independent candidate but giving general support to the Government. The Railway Appeal Board sat today, when the proceedings were open to the Press. Evidence having been head in the cases of two gangers, a beginning was made with the appeals lor dismissals in connection with the Waiwera collision.
