—♦ Two men named John Thompson and Thomas Hayes were arrested last evening for being drunk and fighting at Surman's corner. This morning they interviewed John Arriott, Esq, J. P., who asked tfcem to contribute 40s aad costs to the revenue of the country or undergo a smtence of three days, .
Owing to pressure on space our Napier correspondent's notes are curtailed. By a fire at Katoomba, N.S.W., four children were burned to death. A sale of impounded horses takes place at the Stortford Lodge pound to morrow. Ales. Lean holds liis usual weekly horse sale to-morrow. * * G. H. Yickers and Co. sell a very large assortment of goods at their auction mart to-morrow afternoon. Messrs Duthie and Co., Wellington, are the successful tenderers for the supply of pipes for the Danevirke water supply. Thos. Veale died at New Plymouth this morning. He was one of the oldest settlers in Taranaki, having arrived in 1841. The Clarendon boarding house, New Plymouth, was gutted by fire last night. It was insured for £4OO. It is expected that the Newcastle coal strike will be amicably settled in a few days. It is pleasing to learn that the Borough Council have decided to make an experiment in wood paving for street crossings. The Sydney Civil Service Board have made retrenchments in the Post and Telegraph Departments estimates to save upwards of £50,000 per annum. On o\ir fourth page will bo found the weights for the New Zealand Cup, New Zealand telegrams, and a letter to the editor. During a discussion on the casual labor employed by the Borough Council, Cr Cullen last evening remarked that this work shoidd be distributed amongst the unemployed of the district, and uot bs limited to a few favorites as at present. Mr F. C. Skelton, proprietor of the Zealandia skating rink, announces that on account of the Princess Theatre changing hands he will open in the Band Hall tomorrow evening. Although not so largo as the theatre the floor is superior. Skating commences at 8 o'clock. Frank O'l'orko, sentenced at Hcrbcrtville to a month and seven days for drunkenness, riotous behavior, obscene language, and damage to Government property, was taken to Napier by the midday train. It is probable that George Henry Williams, remanded at Napier this morning on a charge of passing a valueless cheque, will be asked to answer a similar charge at Hastings, the victim being Mr Surman. It is rumored that other cases are pentling. The demand for land in the Hawkes' Bay district, as evinced by the number of applicants for sections in the Elsthorpe estate, is very great. Messrs Grevdle and Co., land and estate agents, of Pahiatua, do business on a very large scale, and consequently many of the very best properties are sold though their hands. A glimpse at their advertisement on our third page will convince all interested that some really good land may be picked up at exceptionally low rates and easy terms. An attempt to bnrglarouslv enter the premises of It. Hiumah and Co., boot importers, was made last night. The would be burglar appears to have been surprised in his work and decamped before the lock of the back door had given way. A fence eight feet high had to be scaled before operations commenced. Sergeant Mitchell is engaged in making investigations. Weather permitting the Town Band will play the following programme tomorrow opposite the shop of Mr Hunt, in whose window some of the Art Union prizes are on exhibition : —Quick March, Great Inter Ocean ; Yalse, Flower Girl; Scliottisclie, Engaged ; Quadrille, Inspiration ; Yalse, Dawn of Day ; Quick March, Struck Oil. At the S. M. Court this morning two men named Frank Iteade, alias Te Kooti. and "William Storey were charged with vagrancy. The former, against whom there were seven previous convictions was sentencen to two months imprisonment in Napier gaol, and the latter to 14 days. John Arnott, Esq, J.P., presided. By the last Frisco mail, news was received of the death of the eldest daughter of Mr "William Tucltwell, of Napier, ceased, who was the wife of Mr James Vercoe, was well known and highly respected in Hastings, having lived here almost from infancy until live years ago, when she left for San Francisco. Her death was a sudden one. Scores of friends mourn a true friend. Deceased was the owner of the cafe now rented by Mr "Winsley. At the Wssleyan Church last evening a service of song was held. The entertainment took the form of an interesting reading, interspersed with song, entitled " On the North Sea." The privations of thousands of mariners engaged in the fisheries of the North Sea were described most vividly by the reader. The great good done by the mission vessels among the great fishing fleet of the German Ocean was fnliy illustrated. Appropriate hymns were well rendered during the evening by the choir under the eonductorship of Mr Knight. A solo, by Miss Eva Treseder, was well executed. Mrs Heighway's solo showed the singer possessed a well-trained voice. A quartette by Mesdames Heighway and Heigliway, and Messrs Heighwav and Land was highly appreciated by the audience. Messrs Goldsmith and Knight's duet was the item of the proprogramme. A solo, by Mrs Price, was feelingly rendered. Tne organ fund will be augmented by last evening's proceeds, and a few more entertainments similar to last evening's will place the choir in possession of a first-class instrument. At Sydney, John Brodie was awarded £2OO by the Supreme Court for injuries received by being knocked off a dray owing to a collision with a tram motor. Two men were at the Central Court, Sydney, remanded on a charge of unlawfully winning £l2O from H. Prately by means of the confidence trick.
