Hastings Borough Council.
MONTHLY MEETING. Thursday, June 4th. „ The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held last evening in the Council chambers. Present. His Worship the Mayor, C'rs Wellwood, Cullen, Williams, Crosse, Beecroft, Murdoch, and Tyerman. A petition re the looping of tree in Havelock road was presented by C'r Murdoch, and signed by nine ratepayers. The Mayor said that the petitioners had nothing to complain of as the trees would not require to be damaged. The road overseer's report was read as follows :
1. I have the honor to report that during the month, in accordance with your instructions. I have served a notice, re cutting down and removing trees, shrubs, or hedges, overlaying the public street or road, on 40 different"owners and occupiers of property, and in several cases it has been complied with at once. 2. Contracts, McCoubrie and Scullion have satisfactory completed their metalling contract on the roads that were formed last year, and have now started the contract for repairing other roads as authorised last meeting, ani are progressing satisfactorily. 3. Havelock Eoad drain.—There is a length of about 5 chains from Lumsden Ilosul to Norton Road, the banks of which are continually slipping; I would recorn-

The surfacemen are now rie putting down the kerbing in HereMunga Street from Karannt Koad to Warren Street as ordered hist meeting : there are only two now in the employ of the Council. Moved bv C'r Murdoch, seconded by Cr Be-.'crofr, and wri--d, " That ck>.use b of the overseer's report Jv a/ ■ >pi.ed." The inspector reported that all slaughterhouses were in a satisfactory condition. The Inspector of Hackney Carriages reported as follows : I have the honor to report that on 29th May I had occasion to lay an information against G. H. Brown for not complying with live-law No 275 ; also against James O'Neill, expressman, for refusing to go upon the stand, and for plying for hire elsewhere than from the public stand appointed, contrary to Bye-laws Nos. 315 and "16. I I>i*g also to respectfully suggest that owinir to the increase of licensed carls, a st;.ml for six should be appointed inline and close alongside the platform fence on the up-country side of the railway station. This would meet the requirements. On the motion of Cr Crosse, seconded by Cr Murdoch, the reported was adopted. Inward correspondence was read as follows :
From T. Waterworth, re blocking the street crossings, the cost of which would he from 12s (5d to 14s per square yard, such crossings to be six feet wide by 12 feet long. —Received. From Messrs Arnott and Cashion asking for shave of Borough advertising.—Contract for work already let, and expires at end of the year. From D. StJohn. laying a complaint against - the mnger re impounding stock. From Mrs Percy, making a similar complaint. A committee consistingof the Mayor, Crs Crosse and Beilby was appointed to enquire into the charges. Ordinary business was proceeded with as under : Cr Murdoch spoke with reference to persons driving without lights within the borough. The Mayor said that the police were fully alive to the bye-law and are doing their best to enforce it. Fntil the police are found lacking in the matter they should not be. interfered with in their duties. Cr Murdoed expressed his satisfaction at the Mayor's remarks. The Council then resolved itself into committee for the pa-sing of accounts, and shortly afterwards adjourned.
