The New Zealand Shipping Company is collecting a general average of 1 per cent on the cargo of the Waikato owing' to the fire and damage resulting to cargo from water. This will bring in £IOOO. The damage is estimated at £-300.

Vv'ki.i.!<iiT< 'N, June ?>. The damage by the recent lire at Lyeli is estimated at £20,000. A meeting has been called for Friday to form a National Schools Defence Association. In order to make np for the exclusion of the ISiblo from the ordinary curriculum it is proposed to organise a band of teachers who shall give unseetarian religious instruction in public schools after the hours appointed for school duties. The body of a man very much decomposed was found iloating in the harbor to-day. It is thought to be that of a seaman named Carl Brim, who has been missing from the steamer Matatua since the middle of last month.
