BEET SUGAR.

The production of beet sugar is being well taken up in Victoria under the stimulus of the Boot Sugar Works Act, 1896, under which the Victorian Government is authorised under certain conditions to advance £2 for every £1 subscribed. The prospectus of a venture to be known as the Maft'ra Beet Sugar Company Limited is now before the people of Melbourne, and of the capital of £50,000 it is proposed to call up only £2-5,000, which with the Government subsidy of £50,000 is considered ample to start the industry. Wo wish similar enterprise could be shown in this colony, which is better adapted for the growth of the sugar beet than is Victoria.
