The situation at the Rand, the rinderpest, and general want of confidence, is paralysing trade.
A thousand men have been thrown out of employment by the closing down of Barney Barnato's mines. The Boers at Pretoria are said to be be irritated at the severity of the sentences passed, and consider that the chance of reconciliation between the two races is lost. May 21. General Joubort prevents President Kruger acting as leniently towards the Reformers as the latter would like to do.
