LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The lad Jarvis is progressing as well as can be expected ; but it will probably be some days before he is out of danger. A resident of Masterton, against whom a prohibition order was applied for, stated that he had lost £2OO by a previous order issued against him. The clever Faust Family give their opening performance in the Princess Theatre this evening. Sufficient is known of the capabilities of this clever eompany to ensure a crowded house. A kindly act in connection with yesterday's fire, and one that was much appreciated, was the supply of hot coffee and refreshments to the members of the Brigade by Mrs Hortop, of Karamu Eoad. A big fall in bread took place in Avenue Eoad on Saturday afternoon, when the spring cart of Mr Keith was carried along a» a tremendous rate by a bolting horsa and ultimately capsized. Little injury was done.

The shop to be vacated by Messrs Hannah and Co. is advertised to let. On Thursday evening next Mr Maughan Barnett will give a pianoforte recital in the Princess Theatre. He is well-known in Napier and Hastings, and his capabilities as a musician are unsurpassed. Mr Barnett will have the assistence of Miss Tanner and Miss St. Hill, whose vocal items are always acceptable. A large number of Maoris returned from the sitting of the Native Parliament at Taupo on Saturday. They had rather a rough trip back, and all were glad to reach Hastings. They express themselves delighted with the treatment they received. The result of the deliberations of Parliament appears elsewhere. The funeral of the late "Wiliiam Gigg, which took place yesterday afternoon, was very largely attended. The members of the Protestant Alliance Society paid the last mark of respect in large numbers, and friends were present from Napier, Haveloclc, &c. The funeral ceremony was performed by the Rev. Dr. Hosking in a most impressive manner. The Native Appellate Court is to-day engaged in hearing an appeal against a decision in favor of Mrs Donnelly and others re the Omahake Block. Mr J. M. Fraser is appearing for appellant, and Mr Lewis for respondent, and Mr E. H. Williams for another set of appellants and Mr A. L. D. Fraser for another set of respondents. The case is likely to occupy the Court for a couple of days. The Mutual Improvement Society in connection with the Wesleyan Church opens its session on Friday evening next, when I'ev. Dr. Hosking will deliver a lecture on " Religion in Politics." The syllabus for the session includes the following interesting discussions :—Gambling, Bible-reading in Schools, Should Women enter the Professions, Land Nationalization, Party Government, and Does Prohibition prohibit. Complaints are rife about the ungentlemanly conduct of certain young men who frequent the streets on Sunday evenings, and who make a practice of compelling ladies to leave the footpath or be jostled in the crowd. Mention of this matter should be sufficient to effect a change in a crowd that is as a rule far from being thoughtless. We have to acknowledge the receipt from Mr A. B. Gibson, Napier, of a report of the proceedings at the 27th annual general meeting of the Mutual Life Association of Australasia. The sum assured for the past year amounted to no less than £IOO,OOO more than in the previous twelve months, and the expenses of management the lowest in the history of the Association. With special inducements offering, intending insurers cannot do better than interview the popiilar district agent in Napier. The services of the members of the local Fire Brigade are given gratuitously, and after the splendid display they made yesterday it may be well be asked if the insurance companies should not be compelled to contribute towards the support of so useful a body. For over four hours the gallant fellows worked, and it was no easy matter for the branchmen with such a pressure of water as the steam-engine gives. The local brigade is a credit to the town, and the value of their services cannot be overestimated. Captain Brouscli lias a smart lot of young men under him, and all hands seem capable workmen. Much consternation was caused last winter, amongst the medical men in Wellington, by the introduction of Woods' Great Peppermint Cure for Coughs and Colds ; that a very bad cougli could be cured by a 1/6 bottle, and a whole family, with a 2/6 bottle, was a serious loss to them. It is sold by all Grocers and Chemists. —Advt. Stop that Cough by taking Neil's Balm of Gilead, a positive cure for coughs, colds, chronic bronchitis, influenza, &c. In large bottles at 2s 6d, at Neil's Botanic Dispensary, Emerson street, Napier, and all leading storekeepers.—Advt. Neil's Celebrated Livek Tonic, a pure botanic remedy for all affections of the liver, biliousness, jaundice, yellowness of the skin, indigestion. &c.
